Retrofit has two parts, and the first one comes before any money is committed. Part one. Establish what the work actually involves. An investment decision needs more than a performance figure. It needs to know what would have to be done, what that involves on this particular network, what it is likely to cost and what it would be expected to deliver. That means investigating the physical system properly. Qualified partners survey what is installed and what condition it is in, establish what can be reused, develop the options and cost them against what each would achieve. New assets are installed, drawings change, equipment is commissioned, manuals arrive and metering changes. The teams who carried out the work move on. The teams who operate the building inherit a folder. When that plant later develops a fault, the commissioning record is hard to find. Digital handover The updated drawings, photographs, asset information, commissioning records, manuals and post-works performance data go back into the same network record, connected to the assets and locations they describe. The operational team gets a usable record of what is there now. Move from the site to the space to the asset and see everything known about it.
